I have a 4400 4WD Hydro that is overcharging the battery. There is considerable etching of the trans heater, rad screen, rad and mounting deck. I have tried to neutralize the acid, prime and repaint. Is this a common problem? The trans heater has the worst damage but should all items be replaced?

I had the same problem with my 4300. The battery that came installed in the tractor had a problem - leaked acid. I had very little damage to the hydraulic cooler, but the battery mounting bolts and battery cables were destroyed. I had the dealership to take a look at it, but they shrugged it off stating the battery had been overfilled (I am sick of fighting with JD dealerships). I removed the old battery, cleaned the entire area with baking soda and flushed it with a large amount of water. I wire brushed all the rust and corrosion from the platform which the battery rest upon and repainted everything. I bought a new battery and had to make a new system to clamp the battery in place. I check the battery and compartment frequently and have not seen any signs of additional damage, corrosion, or leakage from the new battery. ....

Thanks Dave: As of today, the good news is my dealership is fixing the problem under warranty. I have had good service from them and they plan to replace the battery, alternator and heater. Can I anticipate further corrosion to the screen and rad? ....

My experience is a yes. The location in front the rad is a questionable one. The loction near the front of the tractor tends to jar it when working. Remember the only springs on the tractor are on the seat.
There was much discussion previously and you can look in the archives. My recommendation was that you look for valve regulated lead acid battery, (VRLA). The batteries with the glass mat are best as there is greater pressure on the plates and therefore less likely hood of shorting due to vibration. These batteries have not vent and can be mounted in any direction. A normal battery has a vent even if it does not have lids and can leak if tilted. ....

Each of you need to refer to your local dealers and have a new battery with single screw in caps verses the gang caps. This will prevent the effects of the battery gassing. ....
